Training Philosophy

“We were put at ease to feel comfortable providing responses, good open environment. Breakout groups reinforced how to do the tasks thereby making it easier in real life.”

Canada Revenue Agency - ITB Solutions - Ottawa, Ont

Our instructional methodology includes interactive presentations of the theory reinforced through a case study and related exercises. Practical exercises vary to include role-playing, simulation, an individual exercise and a series of small group (3 to 4 participants) exercises. Proposed solutions are presented by the participants and discussed in detail to ensure the applicable project or general management concepts are fully understood. Team composition is changed each day to provide additional peer learning opportunities.

Interactive Lectures: Project management theory is described in interactive lectures that also include the discussion of actual experiences of both the students and the instructor. Live interaction in the classroom is considered a key element in the success of course delivery.

Case Study: Our detailed case study approach provides a common thread to all course exercises.

Group Exercises: Small group exercises, normally consisting of three or four students, reinforce the theory presented with a practical application or problem derived from the scenario described in the case study. Industry best practices and templates are used as applicable. A student spokesperson will rotate through each exercise thereby encouraging active participation from all students.

Role Play: A role-play exercise reinforces the project manager leadership and management responsibilities, emphasizes project control within the team, and enhances negotiation skills.

Simulation: A simulation exercise based on the case study, reflects a presentation to the project Steering Committee/Executive Committee/Senior Review Board at a point in time in the project lifecycle. A number of issues that must be addressed as part of the simulation. As this exercise occurs near the end of the course, students have a comprehensive understanding of the issues applicable to the project.

Instructor Feedback: Instructor feedback is provided during the interactive discussion of proposed solutions for each exercise, including the role-play and simulation. The instructor provides suggested solutions which are discussed to ensure teaching points have been understood thereby solidifying the applicable lessons.
